An Envirothon is an outdoor, Hands-on Learning Experience for high school students. It centers around five different learning stations (soils, wildlife, water resources, forestry and current environmental issues) each of which are staffed by professionals on that subject. The students also have to make a ten minute oral presentation.

The Area 7 Envirothon is sponsored by the 11 county SE Minnesota Soil and Water Conservation Districts (Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore, Houston, Winona, Olmsted, Dodge, Rice, Wabasha, Goodhue and Steele). The top three teams go on to compete at the state level and then the top team at the state will compete at the national level.

Contact your local SWCD for more information on joining us for the 2017 Area Envirothon. For Steele County, contact Adrienne at 507-451-6730 Ext. 3.

For more information on the Envirothon go to the Minnesota Board of Soil and Water Resources website.

May 15th 2017, State Envirothon to be held at Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch in Stewartville, MN.

The Envirothon program started in Pennsylvania in 1979, under the name "Environmental Olympics". Minnesota held its first Envirothon in 1993, with about 100 students from the Twin Cities area. By 1994, several SWCD’s organized regional competitions throughout the state. By 1996, each region in Minnesota hosted competitions. Currently, about 1,000 total students participate in the Envirothon competition throughout Minnesota.

The Envirothon is more than a competition. Together with teachers, schools and professionals, we help develop knowledgeable citizens who can make informed decisions that affect the quality of life in our communities. Ultimately, we are creating new leaders who will provide the vision for our future and well-being.

Each of the 8 areas in Minnesota sends their top 3 teams on to state competition. The Envirothon is a way of teaching students about natural resources that will help them make responsible environmental decisions both now and in the future. (The competition involves 9-12 grade students in teams of 3-5.)  Each team competes in soils, wildlife, water resources, forestry and a current environmental issue tests. They must also compete in an oral presentation. This is very hard work, as they must research the problem presented as oral presentation.

Environmental issues are a vital part of our student’s future, just as math, science, speech and FFA competitions are. The district is challenging all the high schools in Steele County, both private and public, to consider this type of competition for their students.

If you have any questions about the Envirothon, please call or visit the Steele Co. SWCD office.
